Playa Platanitos ANP

The beach and sand dunes at Playa Las Tortugas were recently declared a Natural Protected Area (ANP). This will give extra protection from development and other dangers for the sea turtles that lay their eggs here.

It's called Playa Platanitos ANP and it is a Nature Sanctuary, but we're not sure why because the actual Playa Platanitos is nearby and isn't part of the sanctuary. But, we are very happy nonetheless!

The new sanctuary was declared on January 9, 2024, through a decree issued by Mexico’s President López Obrador. The president has made the designation of protected natural areas a priority of his administration. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have Playa Las Tortugas / Platanitos included!

The Nature Sanctuary will be administered through Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas, or 'CONANP', which is a Mexican governmental agency. We have not yet met with CONANP representatives to hear about how they will implement any new policies. We look forward to doing anything we can to protect our beaches and turtles!
